Type of home & location This depends on whether you are buying the home to live there yourself or to rent it out as a holiday home. If your buying the home to inhabit yourself the choice of home and location is down to personal preference.
Visit the location you are considering buying a home in, take a holiday there, check out the facilities in the area and assess whether they cater for your needs. Ask yourself truthfully if you would feel comfortable and happy to live there 365 days of the year. Do plenty of homework on your desired location, it pays!
If you're purchasing to rent the property out you need to make sure its accessible and near to the airport. Holiday homes need to be situated near plenty of facilities, such as bars, restaurants, clubs, supermarkets, transport links and maybe the coast depending on the location. You want it to as practical and as attractive as possible. If you advertise your property in the UK you may find you have to pay UK and foreign tax.
Estate Agents & solicitors
Look around before you select an estate agent or solicitor, make sure you feel 100% comfortable with them and that they can speak fluent english and the native language of the area you are buying in, this is essential seen as they will be dealing with any rules and regulations.
Make sure you make yourself familiar with any laws of the country you are moving to.
Finances
You'll need to open an account with a local bank to pay your bills, make sure you keep on top of your payments. Foreign banks are known to be tough on those who do not pay up on time. Taxes can be quite high in foreign countries, assess your finances and research taxes, talk to your solicitor or estate agent. It is also advisable to speak to those that have purchased a property abroad to get some pointers and good advice.
