Redecorating a home makes no difference to the asking price of the property, according to new research by insurance firm LV .
A survey of more than 200 UK estate agents found that 70 per cent believe improvements to a homes interior makes little difference to its value, while 64 per cent feel the same about garden landscaping.
A fifth of the five estate agents polled also said that refurbishing the kitchen would have little effect on the asking price of a property .
Instead they revealed that homeowners looking to increase the value of their home should focus on competent structural work such as a good loft conversion, which they claim could add 8 per cent to the asking price.
However, they warned that the money spent on carrying out such work was likely to be greater than the estimated increase in the propertys value.
LV also found that the recession is driving hundreds of thousands of UK homeowners to carry out complex and potentially dangerous home improvements themselves in order to improve the resale value of their homes .
However, the insurer claimed that poorly done DIY jobs could actually reduce the sale price of a property by 5 per cent and could even invalidate the home insurance cover .
