Estate agents in the UK have called on the new coalition Government to act quickly on its plan to scrap the controversial Home Information Packs (HIPs).
Both the Conservatives and the Liberal Democrats promised to get rid of HIPs immediately if they came into power, but since taking over from Labour they have also promised an 80 day consultation period.
Estate agents are now urging the government to clarify the situation regarding the future of HIPs as it could affect the recovery in the UK housing market.
Peter Bolton King, chief executive of the National Association of Estate Agents, which has long campaigned for HIPs to be scrapped, said: "It is vital the Government acts on this commitment boldly, decisively and quickly. Sellers are not going to want to spend hundreds of pounds now if they feel they wont have to in a few months."
"The implications of thousands of home owners deciding to hold off selling could be serious. We urge the Government to act now."
Adam Day, director of online estate agency Hatched.co.uk, added that the longer it takes for the Government to make this change, the more the housing market will be damaged.
Despite being introduced in late 2007 to help home buyers with their purchases, many property groups have argued that HIPs have failed to benefit buyers and have actively discouraged sellers.
