Slowdown In House Prices Rise Reported

Thu, 14 Jan 2010
The pace of UK house price increases slowed in December, according to latest figures from the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS).

RICS revealed that 30 per cent more surveyors reported a rise than fall in prices during the month - 5 per cent less than in November and also down on the figure for October.

The group’s December data also showed that estate agents continued to sell an average of 1.5 homes a week, while the number of new buyer enquiries increased at the slowest rate since the start of 2009.

RICS spokesman Jeremy Leaf said: "The recent loss of momentum in prices and the moderation in new buyer interest can be in part attributed to the housing market pulling down its shutters for Christmas."

"It is likely that the new year will see more interest and activity in the market as those who held back start to market their property with renewed optimism."

He added that a lack of properties for sale was continuing to support house prices as new enquiries continued to outpace new instructions, pushing prices up.

Looking ahead, 13 per cent more surveyors expect further rises in house prices than falls over the next three months, but only 6 per cent more expect sales levels to continue increasing, down from 20 per cent in November.
