Countrywide Estate Agents Reveal Strong Start To 2010

Wed, 17 Feb 2010
New buyer enquiries at Countrywide Estate Agents, the UK’s largest estate agency group, soared by over 80 per cent last month, the company has revealed.

Enquiries from prospective home buyers were up 81.7 per cent in January compared to December 2009 figures, while property instructions and viewings rose by a massive 107 per cent and 50 per cent respectively on the previous month.

The company also revealed that property sales during the month rose by 20 per cent year-on-year, as buyers rushed to take advantage of the final weeks of the Stamp Duty holiday in December.

Countrywide chief executive Grenville Turner said: "New buyer enquiries rose by 81.7 per cent in January 2010 while viewings increased by 50% compared to December 2009.

"Sellers are finally returning to the market, with the number doubling in January and sales are up 20 per cent, while house prices have increased by 15.5 per cent on last year.

"This strong demand is a good indicator and highlights a renewed sense of consumer confidence, which gives us an idea of what the market might look like in the coming months."

Meanwhile, a report by online property portal Rightmove has revealed that asking prices for properties in England and Wales rose by 3.2 per cent in the four weeks to February 6 - the biggest rise since April 2007.

As a result, the average cost of a home now stands at £229,398, while asking prices in London have climbed to a record high of £427,987.
