Residential property sales in the UK have reached their highest level for 18 months, according to latest figures from the National Association of Estate Agents (NAEA) .
The group revealed that the average estate agent sold ten properties in April, compared to eight in March and five in August 2008 the lowest monthly figure for house sales .
The NAEA stats also showed the number of first-time buyers in April held firm at 23 per cent, the same level seen in March, while the average number of properties available for sale increased from to 76 up from 67 in March.
Peter Bolton King, chief executive of the NAEA, said the latest figures suggest that "confidence is returning" among British property buyers and investors, and may show positive signs for the future recovery of the UK housing market.
"What we are beginning to see now are consistent positive indicators that have held firm or improved since the beginning of the year," he said.
"Six months ago people were talking about how British people's attitude to owning property had changed in the recession ."
"The NAEA always said that this was nonsense and that demand for property remained strong, but confidence in the market had gone," Mr King added.
