Buy-to-let landlords looking to rent flats have been warned they must do more to make their properties attractive to possible tenants .
According to Tom Entwistle, editor of specialist rental market website Landlordzone.co.uk, one consequence of the slump in the Britains housing sector is that a surplus of certain property types means that potential tenants can be more selective about where they choose to live.
Mr Entwistle commented: "I think the rental market is holding up very well, apart from, possibly, the flat market in the new build inner city areas
there are probably too many."
"Tenants certainly can be pickier about where they want to live in certain areas so you've got to keep your property up to standard. It is a competitive market," he added.
Research carried out by the Association of Residential Letting Agents found that average weighted rents for flats dropped by 9 per cent during the last quarter.
