Scottish HIPS criticised by estate agents

Fri, 05 Dec 2008
Estate agents have struck out at home information packs in Scotland, claiming that they could damage an already vulnerable market. Homeowners in Scotland now have to buy a report that contains information about their house should they wish to sell it. The cost of the information reports exceeds £1,000 in some cases, and could put off potential sellers .

Apparently, Mark Hordern of the Glasgow Solicitors Property Centre was reported as commenting: "The immediate impact will almost certainly be to reduce the number of homes on the market. It will take some time for sellers to get used to the idea of paying for valuations before they put their home on the market ."

However, the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors came ou in support of the scheme, reportedly saying: "We are hoping England and Wales may adopt the scheme if it's successful in Scotland. The valuations will also be particularly helpful in Scotland because of the system of sealed bids, which previously required a number of separate valuations from potential buyers ."
