Students going to university in September are to benefit from new legislation which protects their money vis-a-vis unscrupulous landlords .
About 867,000 students have lost some if not all their deposit previously, so states the Department for Communities and Local Government (CLG).
The Tenancy Deposit Scheme which came into being on April 6th 2007 is designed to stop landlords withholding deposits without due cause.
Given that about 90% of students are expected to remain in private sector accommodation during their time at university the National Landlords Association (NLA) anticipates that 0.5m students will benefit.
Thus tenants will be able to obtain a redress more easily. However landlords are not fully to blame. Students need to play a role too.
NLA student advice is as follows:
Obtain date-stamped photos of property, signed by tenant and landlord, thus ensuring you have got a record of the state of the property.
Get a receipt should your landlord replace or repair the property during the duration of the tenancy .
Liaise with the landlord throughout the duration of the tenancy to make sure problems do not crop up .
Ensure your university accommodation office examines your contract.
