High House Prices Drive Pensioners North

Fri, 12 May 2006
High house prices in retirement favourite hotspots signify pensioners increasingly choosing northern regions to retire to.

Traditionally for nearly four decades pensioners have headed south for retirement, however, this meant that property values in traditional favourite hotspots soared.

Older Brits are now moving to Yorkshire, the Midlands and Wales as opposed to favourite traditional hotspots like Dorset, so says a report from Alliance Trust Savings funds .

Presently UK's top three retirement hotspots are all in southern England . They are Rother, Christchurch and West Somerset .

A third of those retired are in those areas, with these areas containing over 50% of the national average of pensioners for any area.

1 in 9 Londoners is above retirement age, with there being a similar pattern Leeds, Birmingham, Liverpool and Manchester .
