Legal Costs Tips

Property Information & Advice > Legal Costs Tips

To buy your property you will need to hire a solicitor to deal with the legal aspects. Your solicitor will charge you for:

Searches - Local authority search & land registration - enquiries to check the person selling is the legal owner and registering you as the owner with the land registry. These fees maybe required in advance.

Stamp duty - This is a government tax on house purchase and is usually included in your solicitors bill.

Conveyancing - The transfer of ownership of a property from the seller to the buyer. It's ideal to get at least 3 quotes from different companies before you decide who you want to hire, and make sure you know what the quote includes. For a free conveyancing guide, see here.

Cheap solicitors aren't always the best deal, the reason why they're chaep maybe due to the fact that they're slow with service. Personal recommendations are sometimes the best ways to find a suitable solicitor, ask friends, family and estate agents in the area to aid you in making your decision.
