It is worth planning your move well in advance, it saves a lot of time and unwanted stress. Use our pointers below to plan your move.

Moving date

The best time to move is between Monday and Thursday, this gives you the opportunity to sort out any electrical, gas or plumbing issues before the weekend when it might be slightly more difficult to get hold of someone.

Removal or Self-Move?

Whether you plan to move your possessions into your new home yourself or through the use of a professional removal company is entirely up to you. You do need to assess whether you have the time to do it yourself or the money to pay a removal firm. If you decide to do it yourself, hire yourself a van and have plenty of people on hand to help you. It's cheaper but time consuming.

A removal company may cost a bit more but it's quicker and less stressful. Remember before you set your removal date make sure that the removal company you want to hire is available on that particular date. If you're moving quite a distance it might be cheaper to hire a removal firm in your new area, they might charge less. Feel free to ask the removal company you hire to come and have a look at your current home and new home to check out access points and items you will be removing.

Packing Tips

Make sure you have plenty of boxes, containers, paper and bubble wrap to protect and hold your possessions while in transit. Pack sensibly, do not overfill and do not underfill. Label and list all boxes and containers so nothing gets left behind and you know on arrival at your new home where everything belongs.

Place heavy, solid goods at the bottom and softer, lighter goods at the top. Keep all important documents at hand, for example removal papers, driving license etc. keep a few essential items like toilet roll and food in your car.

This is also the time to get rid of unwanted goods; it'll lessen the load and cost of removal. Make sure all appliances that use water or fuel are drained and dry before removal day such as washing machines, fridges, freezers, lawn mowers etc.

Removal Assistance

If you're moving into an flat and require the use of an lift, get this organised in advance, also sort out any extra parking space.

It is important that you inform people of your change of address and contact number. The main ones are banks, employers, family, friends, electric, gas and water companies to transfer of your services, doctor. Also register with your local doctor in your new area. Contact your children's old and new school and any other organization that is imporant to you.
